Summary

The hoard reportedly consisted of 1,200 gold coins of Theodosius I (AD 379-395) and two gold ingots bearing an imperial stamp. One coin from this hoard was recovered by the Hatay Museum, Antakya. The remainder disappeared through illegal channels. The solidi were said to weigh a total of 5.3 kg. Gold: c. 1200 coins; Gold weight: c. 5340g;

During construction of a Milangaz storage facility. lnformation about the hoard's components came on 17.11.1999 from the Hatay Museum's Acting Director Faruk Kiliric. Kinet site guard Mustafa Kaya supplied details on its discovery.

Site comment

Since Kinet proper was unoccupied from the mid-first century B.C. to the later Middle Ages, it is likely that this hoard was hidden on the seashore by someone coming off a boat. The find provides useful indications about the rise in ground level (0.50 m.) in the four centuries after the Late Hellenistic harbor was abandoned, and soil accumulation over the past 1600 years.
